A Book A Week For A Year…

…is a pretty tall order for some people. Though for myself, and I know many others, reading is like breathing. And a book a week is barely a challenge, even with life and this thing called reality always trying to butt in.

Within these digital walls of a blog, I’m looking to share some of my book love and to also go a step further into looking at why these books appeal to me and how I interpreted them as a reader.

We all have been through school and had to write book reports and essays on what the author is trying to tell us. Let’s be honest: it was/can be dreadful getting those assignments. I actually happen to love writing as much as I love reading, and combining the two, well, its fun. My problem with the assignments was that it was all to often supposed to be a summary or your idea of what the author was trying to say. Here, I hope to do something different. Something better.

On this blog, I’m hoping to write about these books and how I interpreted and enjoyed them myself. The lens of a reader, analyzing the impact that this work had on me, and the filters I had at the time, and maybe how its changed me now.

“You never read the same book twice” The author tells one story, and every reader reads that story, but no one ever reads it in the same way. I want to reflect on this, and turn the focus from the author and their idea, to the story and how I read it.

*SPOILERS*

Keep in mind, I won’t be as kind as River Song and keep spoilers to myself. This isn’t the place for that. Here ye be warned. There will be spoilers. Lots of them. Please, read ahead. I’ll post the book of the week ahead of time, so that you can be prepared. You’ve been properly warned and I don’t want to hear that I ruined something for you.

As I mentioned earlier, reality is quite good at interfering with reading. I’ll be doing my best to have blog entries posted either Sunday or Monday evenings, but if I’m late, apologies ahead of time. I work full time, go to school part time, write in my free time, and am a social creature who likes getting to see my friends on a regular basis. I also love film, and have my TV shows that I follow. Sometimes I won’t have read a book that week. Other weeks I might have read four or five.

This being said, I hope to faithfully post about the book I read (or announce to read) each week. Most of these books will be within the young adult and adult fiction, sci-fi, and fantasy genres. I do branch out, so occasionally there might be an entry on nonfiction (probably on the topics of folklore, mythology, history, or communications).

I am also open to book suggestions!

If there is a book you think is amazing, let me know! I won’t shy away from popular books, and those that are obscure or hard to find intrigue me (one of my favorite authors is a little known Englishman who’s books rarely make it to the US).

If I read a series (or a book from a series), I will review the first book only - though I’ll definitely read reading/have read the rest of the series. This is to allow for different authors and books to be featured each week. An example of this: I will be reading Downfall by Rob Thurman in the next few weeks, but once I do read it, will review the her book Nightlife. Downfall is the ninth book in her Cal Leandros series, while Nightlife is the first. I’ll review the first book, so for those of you who are reading the books as they are announced, won’t have to jump in the middle of a series. That’s just not fair.

On occasion, there will be little bonus’s, like a movie review or something similar.

All in all, I hope that you can find something that you relate to here. Feel free to comment and add to the discussion! I love to hear what others think about these books (love or hate) and why!

This blog will also be linked with my Twitter (@MandaMae013), Pintrest (MandaMae), and Tumblr (mandamae013).

Happy reading
